Garlic cultivation in Zacatecas, Mexico faces a number of diseases including those caused by viruses. A lack of information about these diseases prevails in the state; consequently, the present study is aimed to identify the virus present in commercial or experimental plots of garlic, in Zacatecas. The Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), the Garlic common latent virus (GarCLV), the Shallot latent virus (SLV), the Leek yellow stripe virus (LYSV) and the Tobacco etch virus (TEV) were identified during the 2007- 2008 and 2008-2009 growing seasons in different garlic varieties that were developed in experimental and commercial plots in the main garlic producing municipalities statewide. The incidence of these viruses in the samples ranged from 25.4 to 100% (OYDV); 9.8 to 54.7% (LYSV); 25.4 to 18.2% (TEV) and from 9.8 to 100% (GarCLV) in the 2007 - 2008 and 2008 - 2009 growing seasons, respectively. The SLV incidence (8.6%) was observed only in the 2008 - 2009 cycle. The viruses previously mentioned were also identified in apparently healthy garlic plants, except for TEV.
