GONZALEZ ROMERO, Martín H.. Heirs of Freedom Masculinity and Paradoxes in Public Discussions on Testamentary Will in Mexico (1884). Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.64, pp.103-130. Epub 31-Mar-2023. ISSN 0185-2620. https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.64.77764.
This article studies the discussions published in the Mexican press, originated by an 1884 Civil Code amend, specifically the controversies about free testamentary will. They reveal the reformers’ interest in enlarging the limits of freedom, while paradoxically exerting a moralizing influence on behavior of males from wealthy families. Deep contradictions in the liberal visions of property and labor are identified. The study presents a methodology for the historical investigation of masculinity in relation to the history of political ideas.
