This paper analyzes the internal democratization efforts conducted by the PRI in the process of selecting internal candidates running for mayors in the period between 1965 and 1984, the author uses a methodology based on texts of Hazan and Rahat. It aims to demonstrate the reasons why these attempts of internal democratization failed and the convenience of using these democratic methods of selection in hegemonic political parties.
