Resumen

RISCO, Roxana. The Communicative Strategies of Spanish a in Light of a New Proposal for Its Meaning. Anu. let. lingüíst. filol. [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.1, pp.127-160.  Epub 12-Mayo-2023. ISSN 2448-8224.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.adel.2023.11.1.011x0023s05.

Traditional grammars and prescriptive treatises offer lists of prepositional uses of Spanish a, which may well be considered lists of message types (Alcina Franch and Blecua, 1979; Alonso and Henríquez Ureña, 1981[1938]; Cifuentes, 1996; Fernández López, 1999; García Yebra, 1998; RAE-ASALE, 2010; López, 1970; Luque, 1973; Náñez Fernández, 1990; among others). These lists often include more than twenty different entries and show the extent of the challenge involved in the study of its meaning. This paper proposes a new meaning for a in line with the theoretical perspective of the Columbia School of linguistics (Diver, 1995 [2012]; Huffman, 2001, 2006; Huffman and Davis, 2012; Otheguy, 1995, 2002, 2018; Reid, 1995, 2018; Stern, 2019), an approach that has similarities with the fields of cognitive linguistics and usage-based linguistics (Harder, 1996; Langacker, 2004; Bybee, 2010; Croft, 2013). To exemplify this approach, it presents an analysis contrasting contexts of use in a corpus of tokens of cerca a and cerca de from speakers who use this contrast to produce subtle differences in their messages.

Palabras llave : Columbia School linguistics; monosemy; Spanish preposition a; communicative strategies; variation.
