This article analyzes the modal values of the adverb igual, which have not yet been described in Mexican Spanish. Igual can be followed by the conjunction y to form the adverbial expression igual y. This construction can also be found in modal contexts. I compare the semantic values of these two constructions in Mexican Spanish, analyzing oral examples from the Corpus Sociolingüístico de la Ciudad de México and PRESEEA, and find epistemic values of possibility, attenuation, expectation, and hypothesis in both modal forms. Igual y is used in twice as many cases as igual, suggesting the ease with which non-coordinating y can be incorporated into epistemic contexts. As a consequence, igual y has a wider spectrum of use and greater syntactic flexibility.
