VAZQUEZ-MUNOZ, Roberto y HUERTA-SAQUERO, Alejandro. Toxicity of nanomaterials of biomedical interest in biological systems. Mundo nano [online]. 2018, vol.11, n.20, pp.65-75. Epub 14-Ago-2020. ISSN 2448-5691. https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485691e.2018.20.62715.
In this article, we briefly review the importance of evaluating the toxicity of nanomaterials of biomedical interest (NMIB) that are used as diagnostic and treatment tools. The development of new therapies and medicines based on nanotechnology is growing rapidly due to the advantages over traditional therapies, which has driven the diversification and mass production of these nanomaterials. Among the most common are organic nanoparticles (NPS) and metal NPS. Other nanomaterials are quantum dots or carbon nanostructures. Finally, the need to evaluate its real impact on the environment, which presents unique experimental challenges due to its size and its interactions with the environment and biological systems, is stressed.
