This article explores the conceptual foundations of Architecture of information (AI) for which are structured and classified websites and intranets in order to help users find and manage information, to present the characterization and classification of digital information used newspaper web portals in Colombia.

Applied research was based on 2015 with theoretical contributions of Al-Hawamdeh (2002), Middleton (1999), Prax (2000), Scolari (2010), among others, who define nuclear concepts which are characterized near 15 news websites. The method considered two phases of fieldwork. The first, explanation and verification from three components (thematic cataloging, classification of information and interface types) that the Information Architecture recognizes as fundamental to organize digital documentary information; and the second phase, selection of newspaper web portals.

As a result of applied research it found that most local newspaper web portals generic thematic catalog by folksonomies (tags simple classification) located in the menu bar; common units classified as news content, without accurate information criteria taking advantage of two digital formats (text and images) on the home page; and grouped the set of homogeneous thematic news section labeled those pages.
