ZAMORANO-SAMANO, María Teresa y GARCIA-RUBIO, Oscar Ricardo. First record of the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) in the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.2, e626. Epub 24-Oct-2022. ISSN 1870-7459. https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2021.22.2.543.
We report the first records of the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) for the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. On two occasions in March 2020, we observed a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird in León city parks, feeding on flowers of mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus) and tree tobacco (Nicotiana glauca). It is worth noting that on both occasions specimens were located in secondary vegetation near to water sources. We distinguished the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird by the chestnut-brown central rectrices, square tail, and chestnut-brown undertail coverts. These sightings confirm extension of the species´ distribution to the Nearctic biogeographic region, specifically in the Austro-Central Province.
