Resumen

NOVOA, Fernando J.  y  CASANOVA, Leonardo. Record of a leucism Southern giant-petrel (Macronectes giganteus) in isla Larga, Aysén region, Chile. Huitzil [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.2, e600.  Epub 17-Oct-2022. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2020.21.2.482.

Chromatic abnormalities are due mainly to genetic alterations but may also be caused by environmental and nutritional factors. We report a case of leucism in the Southern Giant-Petrel from Bahía Ana Pink locality, south of isla Larga in the Aysén Region, Chile. The species is widely distributed in the southern oceans, being abundant in the higher latitudes. The plumage of M. giganteus is dimorphic, with a dark phase and a white phase. The white phase could easily be mistaken for a plumage abnormality. It is important to document species and individuals with chromatic abnormalities in the wild, to understand more clearly why this type of abnormality occurs in the pigment of birds and infer the spatio-temporal patterns of its occurrence. Procellariiformes leucistic records in areas of the South Pacific Ocean are scarce or absent, so this study contributes to a better knowledge of plumage abnormalities in this group of seabirds.
