DIAZ-VALENZUELA, Román; GONZALEZ-GARCIA, Fernando y NUNEZ, Rosa María. First record of the Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird (Tilmatura dupontii, Trochilidae) in the Sierra Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico and some notes about its feeding habits. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.1, pp.68-73. ISSN 1870-7459.
We present the first record of the Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird (Tilmatura dupontii) in the Sierra Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. In June 2010, we observed and photographed a female for four days foraging on ten plant species. This species is endemic to Mesoamerica; although it has a wide distribution in five countries in Central America, its distribution is fragmented and restricted in altitude and habitat type. Records for the Sierra Juarez, Oaxaca, were absent. Studies in Mexico have reported this species as rare, and reproductive biology has not been described. Therefore, we consider necessary to conduct studies to understand its distribution, biology, and ecology.
