The liberalization of the Mexican economy in the decade of 1980’s institutionalized and increase the power of an orientation towards the industrial sector to improve the capacity of the manufacturing sector to compete globally. The automobile industry was envisioned as the leading and key sector for the country´s industrialization process due to its dynamism and potential for expanding the internal market through its high level of production and volume of exports. The results of this developmental logic has been mixed and contradictory due to the limited effects of foreign investment flows to generate linkages with the rest of the economy. This paper explains the place of the Mexican automotive industry in the world automotive global value chain to evaluate the role of this sector in advancing economic and social development of the Mexican economy.
