Resumen

NOVELO URDANIVIA, Federico. Social Dialogue in the Mexican Countryside. Economía UNAM [online]. 2007, vol.4, n.10, pp.77-90. ISSN 1665-952X.

A series of diverse circumstances make it difficult to locate the direct causal relations between the government's signing and implementing free trade and investment instruments and poverty in Mexico's countryside, including the country's peasants' lack of "a voice" and "the right to know." A long chain of internal dysfunctional relations, visible since the implementation of industrialization via import substitution, range from society's dualism and primary production to productivity levels unacceptable for participating in international competition, the vanishing rural financial circuit (prices, credit, insurance and subsidies), the real reduction of the federal agricultural budget, and the disappearance of a significant part of the sector's public institutions. All these are variables that explain the ruin of the rural sector, with or without international opening.
