Introduction:

Diabetes mellitus is one of the main health problems worldwide due to its high rates of prevalence, its costs to the economies, its complications, and its high rate of mortality. This illness also involves the family because the changes in the lifestyles of patients demand the support from the family, orientation on decisionmaking, and actions for an adequate management of the illness. In this regard, some studies have demonstrated the benefits of adequate self-management of chronic illness, which includes: adherence to treatments, acknowledgment of the symptoms, healthy diet habits, exercise, and regular visits to the medical personnel.

Methods:

This is a transversal and correlational study with not-probabilistic by convenience sampling involving 100 participants. The Partners in Health Scale and Family APGAR instruments were used.

Results:

Findings show a significant correlation between total family APGAR and the Self- Management index.

Conclusions:

Based on the results, it is concluded that the relationship between selfmanagement and perception of family functionality should be explored in greater detail because this knowledge could help in the design of strategies to address Diabetes Mellitus from a perspective of multidisciplinary health team.
