HERNANDEZ-HERRERA, D. et al. Applying activities related to nursing interventions Falls prevention in hospitalized adults. Enferm. univ [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.2, pp.118-123. ISSN 2395-8421.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.reu.2017.02.007.

Introduction:

Patients falls in hospitals is a frequent adverse event; and the identification of this risk and the related prevention measures are responsibility of the nurses.

Objective:

To identify which activities of those considered within the Falls prevention nursing intervention are applied to hospitalized adult patients in the internal medicine service.

Methodology:

This is a quantitative descriptive study. The sample was constituted by 24 nurses from the internal medicine service in a second level hospital unit. A check-up list was designed with 60 activities proposed by NIC addressing Fall prevention related nursing interventions (6490). Also, a questionnaire was used in order to determine the social and demographical characteristics of the nurses. A 5-point Likert type scale, from never applied to very often applied, was used. Descriptive statistics with frequencies and percentages were calculated.

Results:

From the 24 nurses, 50% were in the range of 31-40 years old, and 95% were female. The most frequently performed activities were those related to the identification of risk factors, and patient transference and education.

Conclusion:

The identification of cognitive deficits and risk factors were found to be the most frequently applied activities by nurses in assistance practice. NIC, as a standardized language, is useful in the Mexican nursing clinical practice, and its activities can be used to propose strategies, falls prevention programs, and suggestions to improve the hospital environment.
