Resumen

ARGUELLO CABRERA, Libertad. Chronic violence and public memory. Between rebels and victims, regarding Lucio Cabañas in Atoyac de Álvarez, Guerrero (2002-2018). Inter disciplina [online]. 2020, vol.8, n.22, pp.87-112.  Epub 15-Ene-2021. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2020.22.76420.

The role of past and present violence in configuring collective identities that are expressed through public commemorations of the assassination of Lucio Cabañas, a rebel leader related to the guerrilla warfare and counter insurgency that took place in Atoyac de Álvarez (Guerrero) during the second half of the XXth century, is analyzed across a period that includes the judicialization of the search for truth and justice, the persisting violence against political opponents, the impunity, the ‘war against drugs’ in Mexico, and some political effects produced by the forced disappearance of the 43 ‘training teachers’ students from Ayotzinapa (2002-2018). Documental and field research shows that chronical violence and different logics of positioning towards the commemorated event shape demands, political affronts and peasant struggles for political recognition.

Palabras llave : political identities; impunity; public commemorations; social inequalities; rural Mexico.
