Resumen
GARRAPA, Anna Mary. “Supermarket revolution” and Californian agriculture: an expanding model?. Inter disciplina [online]. 2018, vol.6, n.14, pp.155-176. Epub 15-Feb-2021. ISSN 2448-5705. https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2018.14.63385.
The article analyzes the impacts of the transformation of the agro-food market, characterized by the growing power of the big supermarket brands, on the local productive structure and the organization of agricultural work. In particular, it investigates the hypothesis of a progressive ‘californization’ of Mediterranean agriculture through a comparison between two citrus production territories in southern Europe: The Gioia Tauro Plain in Italy, in deep economic crisis since the mid-2000s, and the coastal area of Valencia in Spain, currently in crisis, but traditionally very competitive. It will contribute to the debate on the supermarket revolution, within the framework of the food regime theory, combining an analysis of the chain of labor and capital, in order to investigate how the restructuring of agro-food capital impacts both on the processes of circulation of capital, as in the social relations of production. The research methodology has been based on a combination of quantitative and, above all, qualitative techniques.
