LOPEZ BRAVO, Roberto y MACIAS QUINTERO, Juan Ignacio. Elements for the Study of the Post-Classical Landscape of the Central Chiapas Depression, the Heart of Ancient Chiapan. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2021, vol.16, e516. Epub 28-Abr-2023. ISSN 1870-4115. https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2021.v16.516.
This study analyzes how the pre-Hispanic population was distributed in the areas surrounding ancient Chiapan, the capital city of the Chiapanecan nation when the Spaniards arrived. For this purpose, a landscape perspective was used, enabling a rough comparison of the changes that have taken place in the valleys of Terán, Suchiapa, and Tuxtla, the Copoya Tableland, and the banks of the Grijalva River spanning the Post-Classical period (900-1524 A.C.) to date. The presence of fifty archeological sites pertaining to four different classifications suggests that the population was distributed in response to the economic and political needs of the Post-Classical period, when the Chiapanecan nation maintained control over a vast territory of the Central Chiapas Depression.
