Resumen

FLORES MARTINEZ, Rosa María  y  GARAY VILLEGAS, Sagrario. Rural ageing, support networks and trajectories: a comparative study between Mexico and Spain. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2021, vol.16, e508.  Epub 28-Abr-2023. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2021.v16.508.

This paper uses a life course perspective to make a comparative analysis of the relationship between life trajectories and social support networks for the elderly in rural areas. A qualitative study was carried out addressing the life histories of fifteen elders in rural areas (nine in Mexico and six in Spain). As a result, contrasts between family, school, and labor itineraries were observed. In Spain, these itineraries were mainly characterized by gender, whereas in Mexico, by generational cohort. Although in both countries elders receive support, divergences were observed in how it is perceived, the type of support that is granted, and the people who provide support. The study revealed a clear connection between the unfolding of life trajectories and social support networks. This link emerges from the expression of needs related to both individual and family events and transitions.
