The construction of the community hydroelectric plant called Light of the Resistance’s Heroes and Martyrs (Luz de los Héroes y Mártires de la Resistencia), located in Zona Reina, Quiche, Guatemala, is evidence of the perseverance, will power and strength of the communities in resistance that were being persecuted by the Guatemalan army and survived in the mountains throughout 17 years. These communities today generate their own electric power, thus benefitting the community as a whole. This article aims at making a brief review of this process, since it was initially dreamed of during their shelter in the mountains up until the present time in which they are now independently providing, managing, administrating and maintaining electric power. This is an illustration of energy autonomy that other communities may wish to replicate. A feeling-based perspective is an analytic component that allows for a broader understanding of the power relations that make sociocultural transformations visible over time.
