The essay develops the idea of the textualization of the space of Saint Petersburg in 19th-century Russian literature. Semantic center of modern Russian culture since its inception, Petersburg integrates thematically and as a value in classic Russian literature in opposition to Moscow, receptacle of tradition and center of Russian identity prior to Peter the Great's reformations.
