Antituberculosis activity was assessed for a hexanic extract of Carya illinoensis (CIH) and its methanolic (CIFM) and non-methanolic (CIFNM) fractions. CIH, CIFM and CIFNM presented antimycobacterial activity at a concentration of 125 μg mL-1 with inhibitions of 80, 50 and 70%, respectively. The main components in the extract and fractions were found to be three phytosterols and a pentacyclic triterpenoid: sitosterol, amyrin, sitostenone and betulinic acid. The presence of these compounds offers a new view on the kind of molecules responsible for the antituberculosis activity in the cortex of C. illinoensis and the possibility of exploring pharmaceutical applications for this plant.
